Affordable Homes
ElderGrace
ElderGrace is an innovative 28-unit senior co-housing project inspired by fellow Santa Fe Affordable Housing Roundtable member and elder advocacy group Jubilados. This co-housing community occupies a 3.5-acre site located off Cerrillos Road. The ElderGrace neighborhood is located within a half mile of shopping centers and a quarter mile from public transportation. The development is also adjacent to the Arroyo Chamisa Urban Trail system and pedestrian distance from the Genoveva Chavez Community Center.
The ElderGrace project is an innovative blend of community-oriented values and urban planning. Co-housing is a relatively new approach to senior housing that involves a community design process that empowers residents to contribute to the designs of their neighborhood. The members of this "conscious-aging community" dedicate themselves to spiritual growth, mutual support, respect for the environment and service to others. The overall programming of the site focuses around creating community interaction through shared indoor and outdoor spaces, which is reflected in the overall design of the site. The tight-knit nature of the community allows people to downsize the amount of material goods needed because of shared resources between households. The group participates in shared activities including group meals three times weekly. One of the most important aspects of the community fabric is participation in voluntary co-care for fellow residents as they age.
The project features 14 duplexes, a total of 28 units, ranging in size from 850-1100 square foot. The project also features a 2200 square foot "common house" which includes a community kitchen, dining and living room along with a guest bedroom and bath, laundry facilities and an administrative office. Members of the ElderGrace group have consciously decided to have smaller individual units in favor of having a large shared space for entertaining and community functions.
ElderGrace features cutting-edge green building technology meeting Enterprise Community Partner's Green Communities Initiative criteria. ElderGrace is also a pilot project for the LEED Neighborhood Design program. Green features include passive solar orientation, radiant heat, cellulose insulation (R-25 wall, R-50 roof), cross-ventilation, sustainable and healthy building materials, low-flow water saving features and rainwater harvesting. Community sustainable features include a compact, infill site-plan, pedestrian connectivity to nearby trail infrastructure, access to public transportation and universal design principles.
There are currently three units that remain available in ElderGrace. More infoยป
